clean tile floors

In 2021 consumers bought over 3 million square feet of tile flooring. That’s a lot of tiles! But how do you clean tile floors?

That depends on the kind of tile you have. Keep reading our short guide to learn more.

Sweeping the Floor

No matter what kind of tile you have, the first step to cleaning it is to sweep the debris away. However, when sweeping slate, marble, and granite tiles be sure to use a soft-bristled broom since they are easy to scratch. Pay special attention to grout lines and any corners or cabinet overhangs.

You can also vacuum the tile to make the work a bit quicker and easier. Just be sure to set your height to the lower setting. This can also help when doing a deep cleaning versus a regular quick clean-up.

Vinyl and Linoleum Tile

For these types of tiles take extra care not to use an abrasive cleaner since this can leave scratches on them. You can either use a cleaner that your tile manufacturer recommends, or use a mixture of vinegar and warm water, this mixture also makes a great grout cleaner.

If using a cleaner follow the instructions on the bottle to mix inside a bucket. If using a vinegar mixture use 1/4 cup of vinegar per quart of water. Then use a mop to cleanse the tile.

Marble and Natural Stone Tile

These types of tiles can easily be damaged or discolored if you use the wrong type of cleaner. Slate and marble tiles can be easily damaged by anything that’s too acidic like vinegar. Granite is easily discolored by anything other than a mild detergent.

Ceramic and Porcelain Tile

These are the most common tiles found in homes and by far the easiest to take care of. You should be able to use most all-purpose cleaners, vinegar, or detergents. Mix your chemicals according to their instructions in a bucket and use a mop or cloth to clean the tiles.

More About Clean Tile Floors

The frequency you should clean your floors depends on the amount of traffic in that specific area. Higher traffic areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and other shared living areas may need to be clean once a week or more.

If you have pets or children in your space frequently, you may have to clean certain areas even more frequently. If you’ve been sick recently it’s also a good idea to disinfect the floors to get rid of any lingering germs.
